"Ashenden : or The British Agent" is a book founded on his experiences of Secret Service while working for the Intelligence Departement during the 1914-18 War, but rearranged for the purposes of fiction. Ashenden, an author, is sent by Colonel R. to take charge of a group of Allied agents, with his headquarters in Geneva. He has to be continually alert, for enemy agents are equally active. His adventures are varied. The stories are linked together and have a note of quiet anthenticity; and they display Mr Maugham's skill in blending high drama with sardonic humour.
